Cowboys upset Sharks in all-time classic

Cowboys upset Sharks in classic finals match

Skill, guts and self-belief were the key ingredients in one of North Queensland’s most famous victories as the Cowboys knocked off the Sharks 15-14 in an absorbing elimination final on Sunday.

After limping into this year’s finals series, few expected the Cowboys to knock off the defending premiers in Sydney. Their task wasn’t made any easier in the 3rd minute when an error from Antonio Winterstein in his own in-goal gifted a try to Sharks half Chad Townsend.

James Maloney converted before adding a penalty goal in the 18th minute to extend the Sharks lead to 8 points.

The five-eighth then turned from hero to villain when he tackled Cowboys second-rower Ethan Lowe off the football. Maloney received 10 minutes in the sin-bin for the professional foul and the Cowboys were quick to capitalise with a Lowe penalty goal and Kyle Feldt try reducing the deficit to two points.

It was the Sharks turn to hit back in the 56th minute when a perfectly weighted Townsend grubber kick found a flying Jack Bird. Maloney’s sideline conversion restored their eight point advantage but the Cowboys refused to give in.

Inspirational lock forward Jason Taumalolo took it upon himself to lift the visitors in the 63rd minute with a superb solo try that was converted by Lowe.

With the clock winding down, the Sharks’ ill-discipline again proved costly when they were penalised for stripping the ball. Lowe’s successful penalty levelled the scores, sending the match into extra time.

In a thrilling final stanza, it was an 85th minute field goal from LGIAsuper Player Ambassador Michael Morgan that ultimately proved the difference. The decisive play capped off a terrific game for the Cowboys halfback who praised his side’s never-say-die attitude after the match.

‘I don’t think anyone but ourselves really gave us a chance tonight … we weathered the storm a little bit, hung in there and it was good to come out with a win.’

The Cowboys now take on the Parramatta Eels next Saturday night at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium. Can the fairytale continue? Stay tuned to our website and social media channels to find out!
