The sweet taste of victory

Wilmar cane train safety campaign

The Cowboys returned to the winner’s circle with a 24-12 win over the Knights and we hosted Wilmar Sugar in an action-packed Saturday night at the LGIAsuper Community Hub!

Cane trains are synonymous with the North Queensland region and with the annual cane crushing season beginning in June, the Wilmar Sugar team shared an important message - stay safe and keep clear when cane trains are near!

Safety mascot Sam the cane train mingled with young fans at the Hub as the Wilmar Sugar team handed out fairy floss, temporary tattoos, wristbands and cane train safety activity sheets. And here’s the real sweetener – returning Howdy Club members also walked away with a giant Cowboys foam hand!

On-field, the Cowboys were in a less charitable mood, racing to a 6 nil lead courtesy of a Gavin Cooper try and penalty goal from winger Kyle Feldt. It looked to be a long night for the visitors but two tries against the run of the play saw the Knights surge ahead.

A try to Kalyn Ponga in the 37th minute shifted the momentum in the Cowboys’ favour and from there, it was all North Queensland. Further tries to Kane Linnett and Ponga, coupled with a strong second half defensive effort saw the home side register their 5th win of the season.

The Cowboys return to 1300SMILES Stadium on Friday 28 April for a Round 9 clash with the Parramatta Eels. Remember to visit the LGIAsuper Community Hub, located by the western gate to pick up your free piece of merchandise!
