Who will win the 2018 LGIAsuper Community Volunteer Award?

As proud partners of the Queensland Young Achiever Awards, we’re consistently amazed by the achievements of our state’s youth. Over the last 4 weeks, we’ve profiled each of the 2018 LGIAsuper Community Volunteer Award finalists. Here’s a recap!

Emily Ireland, 17 of Robina

After hiking the Kokoda Track with double the recommended pack weight to provide gifts to local villagers, Emily Ireland showed she was more than capable of going the extra mile to help others. As winner of the Premier’s ANZAC Prize in 2015, Emily also travelled to the battlefields of France to commemorate ‘100 years of ANZAC.’

Emily received a Gold Community Service Award for 1,000 hours of community service in a single year and was the recipient of the Gold Coast Women in Business Rising Star Award.

Recently, Emily was selected to carry the Queen’s Baton through her home suburb of Robina on the Gold Coast. She has been nominated for the 2018 Queensland People’s Choice Award at the Queensland Young Achiever Awards.

Jasraaj Singh, 19 of Diddillibah

Jasraaj Singh has been nominated for the 2018 Queensland People’s Choice Award and boasts a volunteering resume well beyond her 19 years.

A regular volunteer with Rotary, Wishlist and Nambour Hospital, Jasraaj has also travelled abroad to help others in need.

She worked in orphanages across Kenya and educated local communities on disease prevention and basic healthcare.

Jasraaj is a UN Youth Ambassador and Queensland Youth Parliament Member for Nicklin.

Madison Birtchnell, 17 of Willow Vale

She might be only 17 but Madison Birtchnell has been volunteering for an incredible 11 years!

Madison raised $1,000 for Ovarian Cancer Australia by organising an International Women’s Week Conference for 150 people. She also sourced thousands of dollars to organise a youth mental health day for 500 students at her school which raised $1,200 for headspace and Beyond Blue.

Madison supports many social justice initiatives and is a volunteer at Ormiston House.

LGIAsuper would like to wish all of this year’s finalists the best of luck. We can’t wait to celebrate the achievements of our state’s youth on Friday 4 May 2018.

Mykeala Campanini, 21 of Indooroopilly

What does an animal lover do when they move to Brisbane to study and are not allowed pets on campus? They start volunteering at an animal shelter – and in the case of Mykeala Campanini, they turn their passion for animal rescue into a thriving charity!

Mykeala founded the animal rescue charity ‘Happy Tails Animal Rescue’ to re-house pets that would otherwise be impounded and euthanised.

After saving 200 animals in her first six months of operation, Mykeala has secured government funding to deliver Queensland’s first purpose-built facility offering safety for pets when families flee domestic violence.
