Spurred on by a vocal home crowd, the North Queensland Cowboys put in a massive effort against the Melbourne Storm but it wasn’t enough to prevent the defending premiers from claiming victory 7-6.
In desperate need of a win, the home team started in determined fashion but – like their opponents, lacked polish at the end of their sets. It wasn’t until the 32nd minute that first points were scored via Storm hooker Cameron Smith who burrowed over from dummy half.
The four-pointer was all that separated the sides at the break, before a penalty goal in the 48th minute extended the Storm’s lead to 6.
With Melbourne’s defence holding firm, it took a piece of individual brilliance from the ‘human highlight reel’, Kyle Feldt to get the Cowboys back into the game.
Te Maire Martin’s cross-field kick was reeled in by Feldt, who then spun around and somehow grounded the ball despite close attention from Storm winger Josh Addo-Carr.
Johnathan Thurston’s booming sideline conversion set up a grandstand finish, before Storm five-eighth Cameron Munster broke the hearts of all Cowboys fans with a field-goal in the 73rd minute.
It might have been a low scoring affair but visitors to the LGIAsuper Community Hub scored big on merchandise as we handed out Cowboys hand flags and Howdy hats. We also welcomed Wilmar Sugar for the third year in a row.
‘Sam the cane train’ safety mascot was joined by representatives from Wilmar to promote the importance of staying safe around cane trains.
There are a number of sugar mills located in ‘Cowboys country’ and we were proud to host the company as they shared their important community message.
We were also proud to welcome guests from NRL Cowboys House. Check out some of the pics on our Facebook page.
NRL Cowboys House provides supported accommodation for 50 young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from remote communities in North-West and Far North Queensland. As a Founding Friend of the House, we always look forward to catching up with staff and students at the game.
The LGIAsuper Community Hub will be back at 1300SMILES Stadium on Friday 15 June for the North Queensland Cowboys’ clash with the New Zealand Warriors at the earlier-than-usual time of 6pm. We hope to see you there!
Remember: current LGIAsuper members can use the LGIAsuper express signs to skip the queue, grab their free drink voucher and show off their new merch!
