A lot has changed in 50 years but not our commitment to the energy and electrical industry

When one of Energy Super’s predecessor funds, was founded in 1967 (ESI Super), Australians still carried a British passport, Harold Holt was Prime Minister, Holden was launching its new Torana sedan, the rugby league grand final was broadcast live for the first time, and almost all our energy supply was coal-based.

A lot has changed since then, including Energy Super being rebranded as Brighter Super – a name that reflects how we feel about the energy and electrical industry. What has not changed is our commitment to working closely with the energy industry and our members.

Brighter Super is still proudly a not-for-profit industry fund, meaning we work for our members only – not shareholders – and make the extra effort to understand you and your needs.

We provide a tailored, award-winning  insurance product that considers the safety risk that electricians and energy workers face. Our insurance covers 80% of salary plus 10% to super, comes with a minimum waiting period of just 14 days and has a broader definition of ‘salary’ meaning that more components of member income, such as overtime and bonuses are included in calculating their benefit*.

We aim to keep our fees low for members and have removed our weekly administration fee of $1 per week per account and investment switching fees. Members now only pay an annual percentage-based administration fee of 0.18% of a member’s account balance per year (capped at $900 per year**).

We invest in communities where our members live and work, with over $1 billion invested in Queensland assets. We are also investing in wind and solar power to support Australia’s energy industry, create jobs and support a cleaner planet for everyone’s future. This includes our $40m investment in Tilt Renewables, Australia’s largest renewable energy business.

We have strong partnerships with employers and representative groups to support and understand the needs of electricians and energy workers, including Mates in Energy, Energy Queensland, Powerlink, Master Electricians Australia, The Services Union, Electrical & Communications Association WA, ElectroGroup and National Electrical Contractors Association Queensland, among others.

**The percentage-based administration fee does not apply to the defined benefit component of Defined Benefit accounts.
